Frequently asked questions

Visitors are a valued part of our patients’ care team, and your safety is important to us. To support that connection, we welcome up to two visitors at a time for each patient 24 hours a day, with a few exceptions:

  • Adult inpatient: Two visitors in shared rooms. Limited hours: 5 a.m.–9 p.m.

  • ICU and outpatient surgery/GI lab: Two visitors at a time (coordinate with unit leader for more)

  • Emergency department: Two visitors at a time recommended. Hours vary based on patient safety and volume

  • NICU: Specific guidelines are in place to keep NICU babies safe,  The NICU team will provide them to you

Visitors of all ages are allowed to stay overnight in private rooms when a sleeper chair is available, but minors must be accompanied by an adult (other than the patient) at all times. Please wash your hands often and avoid visiting if you’re sick. Thank you for helping us maintain a safe, healing environment for all patients and families.

Yes, we offer health and wellness programs in English and Spanish to support you and your family on your journey to better health. Topics include chronic conditions like heart disease, mental health and emotional well-being, nutrition, fitness and healthy lifestyles.

  • Our emotional wellbeing support group meets the first Wednesday of each month from 9–11 a.m. (Spanish only). For details or to register, email or (213) 742-5838.

  • Maternity tours are held Wednesdays in Spanish and Thursdays in English at 10 a.m. Tours last about an hour and include birthing areas. Call (213) 742-6083 to schedule.

Whether it’s your first or third baby, we can offer some extra support and assistance through our Welcome Baby Program. It is a free, voluntary home visiting program for all mothers who live within a 5-mile radius of California Hospital Medical Center and give birth at our facility. Some benefits include a:

  • Free postpartum hospital visit and assistance with breastfeeding

  • Home visit from a registered nurse a few days after your discharge from the hospital

  • Periodic appointments with your parent coach until your baby is 9 months old

Volunteers are an integral part of California Hospital, extending non-clinical care and compassion to all patients and visitors. Our volunteers include students, working adults and retirees.
