The Leavey Trauma Center is the only Level II qualified trauma center in the downtown Los Angeles area. Our center includes 24/7 coverage by general surgeons, with additional support from a team of specialists, including: 

• Orthopedic surgery

• Neurosurgery

• Anesthesiology

• Emergency medicine

• Radiology

• Critical care specialists

Our teams are specially trained in trauma care to treat major injuries, including those caused by car crashes, shootings and stabbings.

The ER is for serious or life-threatening conditions like chest pain, stroke symptoms, difficulty breathing, severe injuries or uncontrollable bleeding. For less severe issues like minor cuts, sprains or colds, urgent care may be more appropriate.

Yes. Emergency and trauma care are provided regardless of your ability to pay or whether you have insurance. Your health and well-being are important to us, and financial assistance options may also be available.

Our services address injuries to multiple body parts, such as severe head trauma, major fractures, internal organ damage and extensive burns. The goal is to stabilize the patient, treat their injuries and support their recovery.

No, an appointment is not needed. Our center is open 24/7 for emergencies. Upon arrival, please use the separate, clearly marked ER entrance.

Patients are seen based on how serious their condition is, not by order of arrival. This process is called triage. From the moment you arrive, a nurse will assess your needs and help ensure you receive the most appropriate care as quickly as possible. Patients with life-threatening conditions, like a heart attack or severe injury, will be prioritized for immediate care.

Bring a photo ID, insurance card, a list of medications and any relevant medical records, if available. You may also bring someone who can help provide information about your condition. If you’re unable to speak, a family member, caregiver or loved one may be asked to share information on your behalf.

Our trauma care team typically sends a summary of your visit to your primary care provider (PCP) or referring health care provider to help keep your care team informed about your emergency department care and support follow-up if needed. In some cases, patients may transition to another facility for continued recovery, such as a rehabilitation center or skilled nursing facility.
