Diagnostic imaging uses various techniques to create pictures of the inside of your body to help doctors diagnose conditions and guide treatment. The Women’s Imaging Center at Chandler Regional offers a full range of medical imaging services, and we are continuously adding more sophisticated technology to keep pace with advancement in diagnostic and treatment capabilities.

Doctors use diagnostic imaging to diagnose conditions and guide treatment, including: 

• Breast MRI

• Calcium scoring 

• DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry)

• Image-guided biopsy

• Mammography services, including digital mammography

• Picture archiving communication system

• Ultrasound

According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer has a very high rate of survivorship when detected early. Monthly self-exams and regular diagnostic examinations help detect breast cancer as early as possible, resulting in more effective treatments. 

Early detection often relies on regular screening. Women age 40 and older should get an annual screening mammogram even if they appear to show no breast symptoms.

You can often schedule a routine screening mammogram without a doctor’s referral. Many insurance plans allow women over 40 to schedule these routine checks directly.

However, if you have symptoms or specific concerns, a doctor's order is typically required for a diagnostic mammogram, breast ultrasounds or breast MRI. You can also call our center and our team can help guide you (480) 728-2008.

Our team will ask about your symptoms or medical history and will guide you through each step to help you feel comfortable.

For a mammogram, a technologist will position your breast in the mammography unit, and your breast will be gently compressed to get clear images. You may feel some brief discomfort, but it only lasts a few seconds. 

Most imaging exams take about 15 to 45 minutes, depending on the test. The exams are generally safe, use the lowest necessary radiation and are usually painless. You may need to lie still or change into a gown.

For many exams, no preparation is needed. However some tests, including CT scans or MRIs that use contrast dye, may require you to avoid eating or drinking beforehand. We will share specific instructions before your appointment.

You can typically view your imaging results through your patient portal. We recommend discussing your results with your health care provider, who can explain what your test results mean for your health.

Many imaging exams are covered by insurance, but coverage can vary by plan and test. We recommend checking with your insurance provider for specific coverage details before your appointment.
