Frequently asked questions

Podiatrists are specially trained physicians whose clinical and surgical training allows them to diagnose and treat foot and ankle conditions. A podiatric physician can address your injury, whether minor, severe, routine or complex, and help find a treatment option to help you heal.

Learn more about podiatry

When you experience pain or discomfort in a foot or ankle, make an appointment with a podiatric physician as soon as possible. Some issues can be resolved quickly, while others may take longer. As with other health issues, the sooner you receive treatment, the better. Prevention is also important for your foot or ankle health.

Podiatrists treat injuries and health conditions that affect feet and ankles. These include:

During your visit with a podiatrist, your provider will ask about your medical history and current health. They will examine you to determine the nature of your issue. Once your condition is diagnosed, your physician will prescribe the proper treatment and care.

If you have chronic non-healing wounds, your physician may refer you to a wound care specialist. If you need foot or ankle rehabilitation, you may receive a referral to outpatient rehabilitation.

While there’s no guaranteed way to fully protect your feet or ankles, you can maintain healthy habits. Wear properly fitting shoes with a firm sole and soft upper area and shop for them in the afternoon (when feet are more swollen). Use seam-free pantyhose or stockings that fit well. Walk regularly for exercise and bathe your feet daily with lukewarm water and mild soap, moisturizing afterward. Check your feet for redness, swelling, or sores and consult a podiatrist if needed. Avoid cutting corns or calluses yourself.
