The Heart & Stroke Center at Memorial Hospital is equipped to treat even the most complex stroke cases, from diagnosis to recovery. As a patient, you will have access to a dedicated stroke team and unit, 24-hour radiologist services with CT technology designated for stroke patients, and full-service rehabilitation capabilities for physical, speech, and occupational rehabilitation.

The cardiologists and neurologists at the Heart & Stroke Center treat a wide range of cardiac and brain conditions like aneurysms, Brain Arteriovenous Malformations (AVMs) and hemorrhages.

 

The Heart & Stroke Center at Memorial Hospital in Lufkin has an intensive care unit that includes 24 rooms and is conveniently located near the surgery suites. In addition, a 26-bed progressive care unit is housed on the fourth floor. Both units feature unique mini nurses’ stations that are positioned between every two patient rooms. This gives nurses the ability to constantly monitor patients.

 

Symptoms of a stroke happen quickly and may include:

  • Sudden numbness, tingling, weakness, or loss of movement in your face, arm, or leg, especially on only one side of your body

  • Sudden vision changes

  • Sudden trouble speaking

  • Sudden confusion or trouble understanding simple statements

  • Sudden problems with walking or balance.

  • A sudden, severe headache that is different from past headaches

  • Fainting

  • A seizure

Staffing includes four personnel per room consisting of registered nurses, radiological technologists, and cardiovascular invasive specialists. Staff members are cross-trained in different areas to provide continuity of care. 

Additional staff members are added depending on the difficulty of the case or the acuity of the patient. These may include neurosurgical physicians and neurologists, and physical, speech and occupational therapists.
