Our general surgeons give you care for a broad range of conditions, including appendicitis, gallstones, hemorrhoids and hernias. They perform routine and complex procedures across various fields of expertise, managing your preparation for surgery, your operation and your recovery.
Minimally invasive surgeries use smaller incisions, specialized tools and cameras to perform procedures. These techniques may lead to less pain and faster recovery times.
Our surgeons are trained in advanced laparoscopic and robotic-assisted surgery. Dignity Health's robotic surgical system uses high-definition 3D visualization that helps guide your surgeon with greater precision and control compared to traditional surgical techniques.
At Dignity Health Medical Group Agave Surgery Clinic – Chandler, we follow the National Institutes of Health criteria for weight loss surgery. You may be a candidate for bariatric surgery if you:
Have a BMI of 35 or greater with one or more obesity-related health conditions
Are 100 pounds or more above ideal body weight or a BMI of 40 or above
Have certain obesity-related health conditions, such as Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea and joint problems
Our experienced, board-certified surgeons perform several effective weight loss procedures. They are designed to help you feel fuller, eat less and reach a healthier weight. They include:
Transoral outlet reduction (TORe)
Duodenal switch is a weight-loss surgery that modifies the stomach and small intestine. It combines removing part of the stomach with an intestinal bypass. This shortens the path food takes through the intestines.
This procedure treats people with severe obesity, particularly those with type 2 diabetes. It works by:
Restricting how much food the stomach can hold
Limiting how much nutrition the small intestine absorbs
Reducing hunger hormones
The duodenal switch typically results in more weight loss than gastric sleeve or gastric bypass procedures. It also helps reduce the risk of obesity-related conditions like heart disease and high blood pressure.
Individuals who are severely obese and at risk for obesity-related diseases may be candidates. This includes those with a body mass index (BMI) of 35-50, depending on other conditions. The surgery can also be a revision for people who previously had a sleeve gastrectomy but did not lose enough weight or regained significant weight.
During the procedure, the surgeon removes part of the stomach and reroutes a section of the intestines. For some patients who are extremely overweight, the operation may occur in two stages, with the intestinal bypass performed 9-12 months after the initial stomach reduction.
If you qualify for weight loss surgery, you will undergo a psychological assessment to help you mentally prepare for the procedure and necessary lifestyle changes. These may include changes in diet, exercise or medical weight loss guidance. Our compassionate team will also listen to your concerns, answer your questions and discuss realistic expectations.
Medical weight loss guidance is a structured and evidence-based approach to weight management. Physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses and dietitians provide oversight for this approach, which helps individuals lose weight without surgery. It includes personalized plans with nutritional changes, physical activity and behavioral counseling.
At Dignity Health’s Weight Loss Center, we offer:
Support groups and individualized counseling
Lifestyle coaching and nutrition guidance
Exercise routines
Guidance on meal replacements and continuous nutrition tracking and feedback
Behavioral health resources, if necessary
When paired with lifestyle changes, weight loss medications can enhance your results. FDA-approved oral and injectable medications may help decrease fat absorption, reduce emotional or stress-related eating, help you feel full longer, suppress appetite and improve metabolic rate.
