Frequently asked questions

Outpatient surgery, sometimes called same-day surgery or ambulatory surgery, is a surgical procedure that lets you go home the same day as your operation. Many outpatient surgeries use minimally invasive techniques, which often lead to a faster recovery and fewer complications. At Mercy Surgery Center, your care team will monitor you closely before, during and after the procedure to ensure your safety and comfort.

At Mercy Surgery Center, we offer general surgery, orthopedic surgery and minimally invasive procedures. In addition, we also perform four highly specialized robotic-assisted surgeries:

Before your outpatient surgery, your care team will provide instructions to help you prepare. These may include fasting before the procedure, adjusting medications and arranging for someone to drive you home afterward. You may also need to complete presurgical testing or paperwork ahead of time. Following these instructions helps ensure your surgery and recovery go as smoothly as possible.

Recovery time after outpatient surgery varies depending on the procedure and your overall health. Many patients are able to return home a few hours after surgery and resume light activities within a few days. Your surgeon will provide specific instructions for pain management, wound care and activity levels to support a safe recovery. Follow-up appointments may also be scheduled to monitor healing.

Before arriving for your procedure, you should bring a photo ID, insurance card and any required paperwork from your care team. Wear comfortable clothing that is easy to change in and out of, and avoid bringing valuables or jewelry. You may also need to bring a list of medications you take. Because most patients receive anesthesia or sedation, you will need to arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home after the procedure.

Most outpatient surgical procedures involve some form of anesthesia to keep patients comfortable during surgery. Depending on the procedure, this may include local anesthesia, regional anesthesia or general anesthesia. An anesthesiologist or anesthesia professional will review your medical history and monitor you closely throughout the procedure to ensure your comfort and safety.

Mercy Surgery Center offers safe and effective robotic surgery. Minimally invasive surgery, including robotic surgery, offers a range of benefits, including:

  • Faster recovery

  • Fewer complications

  • Less blood loss

  • Less need for narcotic pain medicine

  • Quicker return to normal activities

  • Shorter hospital stay

  • Smaller incisions and less scarring

Many people are candidates for robotic surgery, but it may not be right for everyone. Your doctor can help you decide if robotic surgery is the best option for you. Talk to your doctor to learn more about your options. If you have questions, call us at (530) 225-7400.
