Outpatient surgery, sometimes called same-day surgery or ambulatory surgery, is a surgical procedure that lets you go home the same day as your operation. Recovery time after outpatient surgery varies depending on the procedure and your overall health. Many people are able to return home a few hours after surgery and resume light activities within a few days. Your surgeon will provide specific instructions for pain management, wound care and activity levels to support a safe recovery.

Before arriving for your procedure, you should bring a photo ID, insurance card and any required paperwork from your care team. Wear comfortable clothing that is easy to change in and out of, and avoid bringing valuables or jewelry. You may also need to bring a list of medications you take. Because most patients receive anesthesia or sedation, you will need to arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home after the procedure.

Most outpatient surgical procedures involve some form of anesthesia to keep patients comfortable during surgery. Depending on the procedure, this may include local anesthesia, regional anesthesia or general anesthesia. An anesthesiologist or anesthesia professional will review your medical history and monitor you closely throughout the procedure to ensure your comfort and safety.
