When your body is injured, it needs more oxygen to heal. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a treatment where you breathe pure oxygen in a special pressurized chamber. This helps your blood carry more oxygen to damaged tissues.
With repeated treatments, the higher oxygen levels support healing even after therapy ends. The extra oxygen helps fight infection and encourages your body to release healing cells and growth factors, which can speed up recovery.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy chambers are machines that include a reclining bed inside a clear acrylic window. Inside the chamber, you can listen to music or watch television or movies while you receive treatment.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy helps increase oxygen levels and speed healing for people with certain medical conditions. This therapy helps people with:
Bone and skin infections
Compromised or failing skin grafts or flaps
Radiation injuries
Slow-healing lower body wounds caused by diabetes
Wounds that haven't shown improvement in four weeks of standard wound care
No, hyperbaric oxygen therapy is not painful. The only sensation you will experience happens during the pressurization phase of the treatment. During this phase, the slowly increasing pressure pushes on your eardrums, creating a sensation like when you land in an airplane or dive to the bottom of a swimming pool. Our staff will work with you to help relieve this ear pressure.
You can expect the entire process to take about two hours. This includes the time it takes to pressurize and depressurize the chamber, plus 90 minutes of treatment time.
Most major health insurance plans cover wound care services when they are medically necessary. Coverage may vary based on your plan, type of wound and number of visits allowed. Our Wound Healing Center at Dignity Health staff can help verify insurance coverage, explain benefits and answer questions before you begin treatment.
Referral requirements depend on your insurance plan and the type of care you need. Some plans require a referral from a primary care doctor, while others let you schedule directly with a wound care center. It’s important to check with your insurance provider before your visit. Our team can also help with referral and scheduling questions.
