Frequently asked questions

A primary care visit at Primary Care & Women's Health – Dignity Health Medical Group – Bakersfield is time with a doctor or advanced practice provider (APP) who cares for your everyday health needs. Learn more about primary care

An advanced practice provider (APP) is a health care professional who has advanced education and clinical training, allowing them to take on a broader scope of practice and perform tasks traditionally carried out by physicians. This category includes nurse practitioners (NPs), physician assistants (PAs), certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) and clinical nurse specialists (CNSs).

These professionals provide health care services, including diagnosing and treating medical conditions, prescribing medications and offering preventive care.

Primary care providers are often the first point of contact for patients and play a key role in coordinating care. They assess health needs, provide preventive services and guide patients to the right specialists when necessary. By managing referrals, primary care helps connect patients to specialty care in a timely way while supporting continuity of care. This approach can help streamline the health care journey, support scheduling and communication and keep care aligned across a patient’s health needs.
